The South Grenville Rangers came out of this weekend 1-1, following two rollercoaster games on Friday and Saturday night. While Friday’s game vs. Bytown Royals was a rough one for the blue red and white, losing 7-6 in overtime, SGR came out firing on Saturday against the Morrisburg Lions, leading 3-0 after just 3 minutes of play.
Friday night’s bright spot was the play of two new signees – Toronto’s Justin Saab and Manotick’s Joe Maclean. Saab had a goal and 2 assists in his debut, giving SGR a roster boost entering the final months of regular season play. Both goaltenders in the matchup made some strong saves, but both offences took control of play scoring 6 goals each in regulation. Saab spoke to SGR’s journalist in the 2nd intermission, saying “The SGR boys are a good group, and it’s good hockey. I’m enjoying myself so far.” Saab continued, explaining the importance of making an early statement with a new team: “It felt good to get some points for the boys, but we just need to keep scoring.” Despite the strong play by SGR’s two newest members, a tough loss in overtime dampened the mood for The Rangers.
Saturday’s tilt vs. Morrisburg, also on the road, was a turnaround from the night before. the Rangers played a strong team game, with 10/17 SGR players getting on the score sheet with at least one point. Canton, NY’s Jack Finnerty had two points in the outing, adding to his strong season giving him 21 points on the year. Chris Row also put up 2 goals for the first time this season, giving him 9 points in just 8 games since joining South Grenville.
The Red, Blue, and White have a big 2 game weekend coming up! Friday’s matchup is against the Metcalfe Jets on the road at 8:40pm. Saturday night’s game at home is an 8:40pm puck drop vs. the St. Isidore Eagles at the Ingredion Centre! Make sure to come out in your SGR colours, and #PackTheTrack! - Liam Manderville
